Cast of Characters

Me:  Inner city pastor and missioner in the poorest neighborhood in Washington state. Witness to great suffering and great resilience. Scarcity wrestles with the abundance of community. Relationship is key. This is both exhilarating and exhausting. I live in the tension of feeding and being fed.

Mark:  Husband and life companion. Rock and rudder. Willing to try anything once--even the things I cook.

Dad:  He taught me how to shoot and how to fish. How to gut and skin a deer. How to clean a trout. He taught me the reverent harvest and the clean kill. He also taught me justice and the duty to minimize suffering. If you kill it, you'd better eat it. It's that simple.

Auntie Ma:  Mother. Aunt. Friend. Co-conspirator at the Thanksgiving table with its over-representation of menfolk. Someone to talk quilitng, cooking, gardening while the guys rhapsodize about engine blocks. A few years after my mother died, my dad fell in love with her--my mom's little sister--and she with him. We share both blood and history. It makes perfect sense--head and heart. They are proof that grief and loss are never the end of the story.
